For years, Bellatox has been one of the products that represents the Morganna’s Alchemy philosophy beautifully: use intelligent ingredients to help mature skin look smoother, plumper, more rested and more radiant.
But for our special BellatoxX, we wanted to go further.
We began asking a different question:
What if beautiful aging isn’t only about addressing the wrinkle we can see? What if we also support what is happening inside aging skin?
That question led us to an ingredient we may all recognize—but for a completely different reason:
Milk Thistle.
Yes. Milk thistle.
But this isn’t the traditional milk-thistle story you may know from supplements.
The active we’re introducing into BellatoxX comes from Silybum marianum, using upcycled seedless milk-thistle flowers standardized in flavonoids. The ingredient presentation positions these flavonoids specifically around cellular senescence and skin longevity. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
And this is where the science becomes fascinating.
First, What Are “Zombie Cells”?
It sounds like something from a Halloween movie, but cellular senescence is a real biological process.
As cells experience aging and stresses such as UV exposure, oxidative stress and pollution, some can enter a state called cellular senescence. They have essentially stopped functioning like normal healthy cells, but remain metabolically active.
These are sometimes nicknamed “zombie cells.”
According to the research presented for the milk-thistle active, senescent fibroblasts can accumulate and release signaling molecules collectively known as SASP — Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype.
These signals include inflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and IL-8 as well as MMP-1, an enzyme associated with degradation of the skin’s extracellular matrix. The presentation connects this process with reduced collagen I, impaired matrix structure, reduced cell renewal, loss of radiance and changes in skin texture and firmness. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
In other words:
Some of what we recognize as aging skin isn’t happening only at the surface.
And that’s precisely why this ingredient caught our attention.
Milk Thistle: From Traditional Botanical to Modern Skin-Longevity Ingredient
Milk thistle has a long history of traditional botanical use, but modern cosmetic science is looking at the plant from a completely different perspective.
Instead of using the seeds, this technology uses upcycled milk-thistle flowers—material that would otherwise be waste from production centered on the seeds.
The resulting cosmetic ingredient is described as 100% natural-origin under ISO 16128, COSMOS approved, preservative-free and readily biodegradable. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
That immediately interested us at Morganna’s Alchemy.
Because innovation doesn’t always mean abandoning nature.
Sometimes it means discovering what nature was capable of doing all along.
The Laboratory Results Are What Really Got Our Attention
In vitro testing of the milk-thistle active examined three major areas:
senescent-cell reduction, SASP reduction, and restoration of cellular function.
The results reported in the ingredient research included:
- 47% reduction in senescent cells
- 61% increase in apoptotic cells
- 35% reduction in IL-6
- 40% reduction in IL-8
- 32% reduction in MMP-1
- 99% reduction in the DNA-damage marker γ-H2A.X
- 56% reduction in p21 expression, associated with cell-cycle inhibition
- 40% increase in collagen I production
These are laboratory findings on the ingredient, not clinical results for BellatoxX itself. But they help explain why we found milk thistle so exciting for a formula designed around mature-looking skin. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
Think of it this way:
Traditional anti-aging skincare often asks:
“How do we make this wrinkle look better?”
Skin-longevity science asks:
“What is happening to the cells and the environment supporting the skin?”
That’s a very different conversation.
Then Came the Human Studies
This is where the ingredient became even more interesting.
The supplier didn’t study only laboratory markers. The milk-thistle active was also evaluated in topical clinical studies looking at visible skin characteristics including hydration, firmness, elasticity, complexion, luminosity and the appearance associated with “glass skin.”
Again, these numbers belong to the ingredient studies, not BellatoxX clinical testing.
Hydration
In a split-face study involving 13 women ages 35–55 using a cream containing 3% of the active twice daily for 28 days, skin hydration improved up to 57%. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
Elasticity & Firmness
In another 28-day split-face evaluation involving 12 women ages 35–55, measurements showed improvements of up to 93% in elasticity and up to 106% in firmness for the measured parameters reported in the study. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
For us, that immediately made milk thistle an interesting companion to BellatoxX.
Because BellatoxX isn’t meant to attack one isolated sign of aging.
We want the skin to look smoother, firmer, hydrated, luminous and alive.
And Then There Is the Glow…
This may be one of our favorite parts of the research.
The presentation connects cellular senescence with something consumers understand immediately:
Glass skin.
Glass skin isn’t about covering the skin with shine.
It’s the appearance of skin that is exceptionally smooth, hydrated, luminous, clear and translucent-looking—skin that reflects light beautifully because its surface looks healthy and refined.
A separate clinical study evaluated 41 Chinese women and men ages 23–48 using a 3% cream twice daily for 21 days.
The ingredient produced reported improvements of up to:
+17% transparency
+11% radiance
-6% pore visibility
+11% smoothness
+31% and +27% in measured translucency parameters
CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
And here’s something we particularly liked: the researchers didn’t rely solely on instruments.
Fifty non-expert observers were shown participant images and asked to classify them as “glass skin” or “no glass skin.” The presentation reports that the visible glass-skin effect was perceptible to those observers as well.
That’s the kind of glow we’re interested in.
Not glitter.
Not makeup.
Not temporary shine.
The appearance of beautifully hydrated, smoother, light-reflective skin.
Why Milk Thistle Belongs in BellatoxX
This is where everything comes together.
BellatoxX was never intended to be just another moisturizer.
We already built the Bellatox story around Paracress, one of our favorite botanicals for helping soften the appearance of expression lines.
For this special BellatoxX, we’re expanding that philosophy.
Rather than relying on one hero ingredient, we’re building a more sophisticated approach to mature skin—combining ingredients that address different aspects of how aging appears.
Paracress → expression-line appearance
Milk Thistle → skin longevity, firmness, radiance and glass-skin appearance
And our special BellatoxX formula goes even further with the additional neuromodulating-peptide-inspired ingredients we selected for this edition.
That makes the X mean something.
BellatoxX isn’t simply “more Bellatox.”
It’s the next evolution of Bellatox.
Especially for Skin Over 40
This science is particularly relevant to the women Morganna’s Alchemy was created to serve.
After 40, we often hear:
“My skin just doesn’t bounce back the way it used to.”
“My skin looks tired even when I’m not.”
“I don’t have the glow I used to have.”
“My texture has changed.”
“My neck suddenly looks older.”
These aren’t necessarily separate problems.
Skin aging involves interconnected changes in hydration, extracellular matrix, collagen support, inflammation, cellular renewal and the way light reflects from the skin.
That’s why we’re increasingly interested in skin longevity rather than simply anti-aging.
Anti-aging says:
Fight age.
Our philosophy is different.
Support the skin as it ages.
Help it remain resilient.
Help it remain hydrated.
Help it maintain its structure.
Help it reflect light beautifully.
And help women feel fantastic in the skin they’re in.
A Special Mention for the Neck & Décolleté
Here’s another reason we love this ingredient for BellatoxX.
The milk-thistle active wasn’t tested only on the face.
It was also clinically evaluated on the neck and décolleté.
In a study of 30 women ages 49–60, the 3% active was applied twice daily to the neck/décolleté. The study reported improvements in luminosity and hydration over 56 days; the presentation also includes photographic examples showing visible changes in neck and décolleté appearance.
And that is a wonderful reminder:
Skincare shouldn’t stop at the jawline.
When applying BellatoxX, bring it down.
Face.
Jawline.
Neck.
Décolleté.
Your skincare routine should treat these areas as one continuous canvas.
Nature + Science: The Morganna’s Alchemy Way
What excites me most about milk thistle isn’t simply that it’s botanical.
And it isn’t simply that it comes with impressive data.
It’s the combination.
A plant with centuries of traditional history is being examined through modern cellular-aging science.
The milk-thistle flowers used for this active are upcycled, standardized for flavonoids and sourced from South Korea. The ingredient is designed specifically for modern skin-longevity and glass-skin applications. CELYSCENCE – Presentation v2
That intersection between nature, chemistry and intelligent formulation is exactly where Morganna’s Alchemy belongs.
After 20 years of formulating skincare, I’m still fascinated by what we can discover when we stop looking for the next trendy ingredient and start asking a better question:
What does the skin actually need?
And that is why milk thistle is coming to BellatoxX.
The Bellatox you love is evolving.
Same Morganna philosophy.
More advanced skin science.
A new focus on skin longevity.
And one very exciting X.
